T&T Jazz Festival begins

.

What stands out most in the photographs on exhibit at Glimpses of the Pan Jazz Experience are the facial expressions of the artistes and musicians. These expressions and contortions exude the passion with which the subjects execute their performances and trace the love and devotion to their respective art forms. The exhibition, mounted by the Queen’s Royal College Foundation, is on at the National Museum and Art Gallery, Frederick Street, Port of Spain. It is a part of the 2007 Trinidad and Tobago Steelpan and Jazz Festival produced by the foundation.

The exhibition explores several significant moments in the pan jazz expression from the 1940′s to the present, highlighting some of the persons who were active in the movement then and are still making strides to this day. Members of the foundation who attended QRC in the 1960′s reflect on what they say were their finest moments at the school when their history teacher, Scofield Pilgrim, a bass player who led in the formation of the QRC Jazz Club and encouraged the students to explore musical expressions outside of the conventional forms of the day.

This of course included fusing the pan with jazz, which would develop into a major expression that has taken hold the world over. There is a photo of Sarah Vaughn with Dem Fortunates Steelband from Belmont, another of an iron man beating his brains out as he knocks a wheel hub and one of Len “Boogsie” Sharpe and SuperBlue becoming one harmonious voice as they perform together. And these are but a few of the sixty images that tell a thousand and more experiences. The exhibition runs until Saturday 27th October.T&T Jazz Festival Lineup
