Whatever you do, if it don’t return on you, it gonna return on the generation to come.

With a trio of powerful singles climbing up the Billboard charts, Richie Spice has elevated the lyrical standards of hit reggae records and generated great excitement surrounding his new album Gideon Boot released last week on VP records label. OonuCulture caught up with Richie in NYC just days after wrapping up production on his latest video for “Di Plane Land”to discuss music, life and his his latest album “Gideon Boot”.
OC: So what have you been up to since your last album?
Richie: Well, I finished shooting the video to my latest single “Di plan land“, and took part in a show at Armazura with Capelton and Natural Black. I’ve also been setting up a company called “Bonner cornerstone music” I would like to do some producing of my own some day. Also it’s good to have a foundation for the younger generation who are interested in music.
OC: Tell us a bit about the album.
Richie: The album is entitled Gideon Boot and was executively produced by Bobby Digital who is a pioneer in the business. It contains fifteen tracks, not only does it have more powerful songs, but also it is more instumental and you tend to get a whole different vibe to it than my last album[In the streets to Africa]. there are also two other producers who worked on this album, Flavour, who produced Di Plane Land, and Arif Cooper on The World Is A Cycle.
OC: What does the title “Gideon Boot” mean.
Richie: The title Gideon Boot come from the Book Of Judges and basically what it means is that it’s time to get serious, cut out all the stupidness y’know? We need to saddle up ourselves, lace up our boots and start making better and setting better examples for the future generation.
OC: Any collaborations on the album?
Richie: Yes. I have a song entitled “Let’s Go” with Gentleman out of Germany. It is a very excellent song
OC: What’s your favorite song on the album
Richie: All of them, there is no one in particular. It’s like a book, every page has it’s own meaning but they all combine to give a full story.
OC: On your last album there was an even mix of culture and lover’s rock. Can we expect the same on this album?
Richie: Yes, this album is balanced. I can’t sing culture tune only, there must be something for the ladies. You have to respect the ladies, sing songs to uplift their spirit and make them feel better about themselves in their day to day living. Nothing to discriminate, but only to strengthen them, give courage to carry on.
OC: Speaking of the ladies, you had a big hit with the song Brown Skin. Is there a song along those line or one that might even surpass brown skin?
Richie: Yes, we have a song called “Make up your mind” and another called “Ticking like a bomb”
OC: What inspires you to write?
Richie: My inspiration come from many things that happen in day to day life. there is so much happening in the world that’s hard to miss. It could be as simple as turning on the TV or even taking a walk out in the street. Like I said [singing] The world is a cycle and everything weh happen Yes It come round in a circle. Got to check the step you take and every breath you make Because the little things you do is comin back at you.
OC: Any last words for your fans?
Richie: Yes. I’d like to thank my fans for embracing my music. Always be positive and have confidence in yourself. Teach the youth dem to do right and strive for the greatest in whatever you do.
