Even though Truck Back Records has only been in existence for a relatively short period of time, it is already responsible for making considerable noise on the dancehall circuits with the Gearbox riddim. The studio, which was once used by the Locke brothers to transport sound systems, is actually located in a container truck and has had a long time relationship with dancehall veterans like Elephant Man, and Harry Toddler, who incidentally is responsible for the name given to the label. I recently had a phone interview with Steve Locke, founder of Truck Back Records, who gave me some insight into the label’s past as well as a look into it’s bright future.
Q: Let’s start from the beginning. How did you get started in this business?
A:Well, I’m a musician. I started out playing Bass guitar and then put together a band called Kaushan. We were sort of a support band playing for Gregory Isaacs, Shabba Ranks, Bounty Killer.
Q: How long has Truck Back Records been around?
A: about 6 years
Q:Where did the name come from?
A: Funny story, lol, Harry Toddler was in d studio one day, and him get a call, dem ask him where him da, him look around and say, me da in ah truck back, lol, and d name jus kinda stick
Q: So Truck Back has a relationship with Harry Toddler?
A: Yeah man, definitely, from long time.
Q: Truck Back is the label, who handles your distribution?
A: Zoe Jack distribution
Q: And this is worldwide?
A: Yes
Q: So after the great success of the Gearbox riddim, what does Truck Back have next for the people?
A: D new riddim called Dashboard riddim, ah new group on it called Deh Deh, as well as Chris Martin.
Q: What about Erupt, after the success he had on the Gearbox riddim, i would expect he would be on it too?
A: Of coarse, Erupt is on Dashboard riddim with a tune called “Mek Noise”
Q: Dashboard riddim sound tuff, what else can the people look foward to from Truck Back?
A: We also have a culture artist on the label called Baijie, he was featured on d Gearbox Riddim, and have a album coming out called “Equilibrium”
Q: So with all these ongoing projects, when can we expect to see Truck Back artists on stage?
A: Very soon, tour dates are in the works as we speak.
Q: Well speaking for us here in N.Y we definitely wanna see Truck Back artists on stage out here
A: Yeah man, nuff respect to d fans out there, Truck Back soon come.
Q: Anyone you wanna biggup?
A: Definitely, mi brother Andrew, him handle the studio, Johny Wonder, him ah d king ah d streets in N.Y, him take care ah d promotions, Heather Cameron in administration, d whole Truck Back staff, seen, and of coarse, all d people who support Truck Back Records worldwide.
