This bass bumping, party-ready compilation is jam-packed with enduring classics and massive summer scorching songs
Artist: Various
Label: VP Records
Released: June 9th
Soca gold 2009 takes you on a lyrical journey where no passport is required. The 18 track cd compilation boasts some of the hottest acts in Soca music. The album kicks off at jump up pace by Edwin Yearwood, with ‘Handle Ya Bizniz’. Destra follows in keeping the tempo going with ‘Bacchanal’, a song in which she pretty much sums up the spirit of the carnival season.
Both “Tursty†by Roy Cape feat Blaxx, and “Head Bad†by the Skinny Fabulous are strong commentaries on the day of jump up that just makes you wish you were among the throngs of masqueraders. Hands down, the best track goes to the wickedly infectious “Tight” by Peter Ram, which is sure to be the anthem of the summer.
However there are several other tracks in the balance of the album which make it even better. Bunji Garlin’s “Plenty Gal†feat Beenie Man, “Carnival Again†by Bigie Irie and “Radica†by this year’s ‘Chutney Soca Monarch King of Trinidad’ Kenneth Salick. This song is a nice mix of not only vocals, but excellent instrumentation as well.
Other highlights include “Wrong Gal†by Red Plastic Bag, “Bashment Winners†by Lil Rick and “Looking Hot†by Patrice Roberts. As a bonus, this year includes a DVD of music videos, girls in costume, and J’ouvert morning highlights.
I would recommend this album to newcomers of the genre or those who fell off in the last year or so looking to catch up on the latest Soca tunes. However, more established Soca vets just might have ALL these tracks in their collection already.
